YOGA TEACHER TRAINING

ADVANCE YOUR PRACTICE. FIND YOUR VOICE. SHARE YOUR PASSION. BOOST YOUR PERSONAL GROWTH.

In 2020 we are exceptionally not running a yoga teacher training program. One of the reasons is that where possible we would prefer to host our training in person instead of mostly online. But the main reason is that we are working on an exciting new project: the construction of a new yoga retreat center on a magnificent stretch of beach in the small town of Tofo in Mozambique!

Our venue is called Kumba Lodge and will be ready for the first guests around April 2021. There will be daily yoga classes, wholesome food, stunning beach accommodation and everything you need to immerse yourself into your practice and in the marvelous nature all around.

When the lodge is ready we will start hosting retreats and also intensive teacher training programs where you can take the 200hr YTT over the course of a month and at the same time experience an incredible retreat and holiday experience in a spot of paradise in Africa.

If you want to receive updates on future programs then subscribe to our newsletter at the bottom of this page, and for a sneak peek of our new project head over to www.kumbalodge.com

ASANA PRACTICE

Before we learn to teach yoga to others, we need to practice these yoga poses and sequences ourselves. In the mornings you will be guided through 120 minute complete, intelligently sequenced vinyasa practice led by Mel or Steven (or both) that will allow you to experience your physical edge and grow as a practitioner. You’ll learn to work with your own body in a more skillful, effective, and efficient way in order to build depth in your practice for years to come.

PRANAYAMA, KRIYAS AND MEDITATION PRACTICE

While a lot of practitioners come to yoga for the physical benefits, this is just the tip of the iceberg. We will be working towards flexibility, strength and balance not just on a physical level, but also on a mental and spiritual level. This is where our daily practice of pranayama (breathing techniques and control), kriyas (cleansing practices) and meditation (mind training) will provide us with the tools to make this a deeply transformative experience on every level.

ASANA ALIGNMENT STUDY

Starting with foundational yoga poses and gradually moving on to more advanced poses and variations, students will learn all the key elements, benefits, anatomical details, variations, common misalignments and contra-indications for each pose. An important part is also to learn how to give precise verbal cues to get into and out of the pose and make adjustments while in it. This module will also include strength and flexibility training, partner work and the use of walls and props to make the poses more accessible.

HANDS-ON ASSISTS

Hands-on assists can be a very powerful way for a yoga teacher to connect with students one on one, and to teach students correct alignment in a pose. Participants will learn to visually analyse their students’ alignment and to approach them with safe, confident and effective hands-on assists to enhance their experience in the yoga class.

ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY

This module is presented by a physiotherapist who is also a qualified yoga instructor. In order to guide yoga practitioners safely and effectively through a yoga sequence, a good understanding of the human anatomy is required. We have 5 x 3hr dedicated workshops to learn about the bones, muscles, connective tissue and systems at work in our body in relation to a yoga practice. A thorough understanding of this will help keep your students safe and to design sequences to target a particular part of the body.

SEQUENCING

This training is rooted in the vinyasa style of yoga, in which practitioners move through a sequence of interlinked yoga poses. The yoga teacher has a lot of freedom in this style to choose the poses and the theme and vary them for each class. Learning intelligent and effective sequencing is therefore an important module in a vinyasa teacher training and students of this program will learn all the tools to put together and teach a great yoga sequence. Upon finishing this program, yogis will walk away with a template of a well-rounded yoga session which they can adapt to any length and level of the class required.

YOGA HISTORY, PHILOSOPHY AND TRADITION

Yoga has a long and rich history which has developed into a myriad of different contemporary yoga styles. While it is good to adapt our yoga practice to our modern day lifestyles, we also want to stay true to and rooted in this long tradition and continue to apply ancient lessons and techniques in our yoga teaching.

THE BUSINESS OF YOGA

Yoga as business and industry is growing at an exponential level worldwide and offers many opportunities for yoga teacher entrepreneurs to make a living or supplement their income. We will discover what makes a great yoga teacher and how to develop your own personal brand and income from this. Participants will learn hands on how to put together yoga events, workshops and retreats and how to build an online presence as a yoga teacher and influencer to stay connected with your followers.
